What is LEAVE A LEGACY?

LEAVE A LEGACY is a community-based effort to encourage people from all walks of life to make gifts from their estates to the non-profit organizations of their choice.  LEAVE A LEGACY is an initiative of the Waterloo-Wellington Roundtable of the Canadian Association of Gift Planners in partnership with non-profit organization, sponsors and allied professionals in our region.

Why is the LEAVE A LEGACY initiative important to Waterloo-Wellington?

As governments cut back on funding, charitable non-profit organizations are forced to look for ongoing funding from other sources.  In the years ahead, experts expect a trillion dollars to change hands from one generation to the next.  The potential for increased philanthropy to benefit communities like Waterloo-Wellington is enormous.  It is up to this grassroots campaign to show people how they can leave a legacy to benefit future generations.

Don’t most people already know they can leave a gift to charity in their will?

Apparently not.  Only about 7% of Canadians leave a gift to charity in their will compared to 62% of Canadians who support charities during their lifetime.  Why?  The public is generally unfamiliar with this type of philanthropy and the many tax incentives.  Many believe they can not afford to give a gift to charity, they feel it is only something the rich can do, gifts of all sizes are important, and non-profit organizations are deeply grateful for them.  Many smaller non-profit organizations do not have the staff to contact and educate their donors regarding this type of giving.  Many donors do not know how or where to get help in order to establish a gift.

How will LEAVE A LEGACY promote planned giving in Waterloo-Wellington?

Planned activities include:

  • Website

  • Speakers’ Bureau

  • Allied professionals and non-profit partners will distribute brochures to clients, donors and the public
